About Haphazard Homestead
- I love living here at Haphazard Homestead in Oregon’s Willamette Valley! I like simple living, growing food, and living close to the land.
- I believe that we can all have lives that are richer, more secure, more grounded, and more interesting by getting to know the plants and the land around us – in our yards, our parks, and our wilderness. I know this is true in my own life.
- I like growing food! But I am not all that organized about it. I have a lot of fruit trees and perennial vegetables. My garden looks very different every year, depending on life. But I don’t think it has to be hard or complicated to grow a lot. The main thing is to take care of the soil!
- I like to eat! I eat a lot of wild foods and produce from my garden. I preserve a lot of food, too. I cook pretty simple, but with great produce, it usually tastes pretty good!
- Wild plants can be real food for regular people! I use a lot of wild plants – as real food and drink. I’ve traveled a lot in connection with my work, and have eaten in a lot of restaurants, from simple to fancy. I can say, without any hesitation, that a lot of the wild foods I have made, have been better than most of the restaurant food I’ve had – hands down!
- Weeds – Most of them, you can’t buy them in a store at any price! But you can pick all you want, for free! Thinking about all the meals and drinks I’ve had from wild plants, that I haven’t had buy from a store or restaurant, I’m sure that I have saved thousands and thousands of dollars over the years.
- Oh yeah – sometimes we get a little work done around here, have some fun around a campfire, or set out to experience other stuff.
